What Is Deionised Water?
Deionised Water (also called DI water or demineralised water) is increasing in industrial and manufacturing usage, but what exactly is Deionised Water?
What is Deionised Water?
Deionised (DI) water simply means that the ions that are present in the water are removed. This is used in a variety of industries for a number of reasons.
Pure water, which is another term for deionised water, is rarer than you might think. For example, tap water contains mineral ions such as calcium, magnesium and sodium. Whilst this is fine for drinking water, many industrial applications require water that contains significantly lower levels of these minerals.
Another example is mains water. Mains water can lead to a build-up of limescale in a bathroom over time as it contains calcium. This is typically not an issue for households, but if the same water was used in a car battery, it would lead to the internals of the battery being coated with calcium and drastically reduce the battery’s performance. As a result, deionised water is used in car batteries to prevent the internals from being coated in minerals.
How is Deionised Water Made?
Landowners deionised water is made through a process called Reverse Osmosis. This works by first softening the incoming water, before passing it through several membranes. These membranes act as very fine filters and remove the vast majority of minerals from the water. After this process, the water is passed through polishing units to further remove mineral contaminants and produce deionised water.
What are the Benefits of Deionised Water?
The main benefit of deionised water is that it is very pure. Water without minerals allows day to day processes to run without contamination that may be caused if regular tap water was used.
Along with its low conductivity and corrosiveness, deionised water is ideal in a range of applications where tap water cannot be used.
Where is Deionised Water used?
Deionised water is used in a range of applications, including:
- Households – Deionised water is used for Window cleaning (to prevent dry spots) and in irons (to prevent limescale).
- Automotive – It is used for battery top up water and cleaning fluids.
- Industrial – Pure water is used in laboratory testing, plant cleaning and anaerobic digestion.
